AUSTRALIAN TROPICAL HEALTH & NUTRITION CONFERENCE

17 - 19 JULY 1997

"International health: opportunities and threats, costs and benefits"

VENUE: Carlton Crest Hotel, Brisbane, Australia.

MAIN THEMES of the conference will be indigenous health issues; economics
and health financing; travel and health; emerging and re-emerging
diseases; and participatory action research. There will also be special
interest group sessions covering a wide range of topics.

SUMMARY: As the 20th century comes to a close, it is timely to reflect on
international health and development. New technologies (eg diagnostic
tests), new approaches to disease control (eg community participation or
participatory action research) and recent research (eg vaccine
development) provide opportunities for improving health and development in
the next decades. However, new diseases (eg ebola), re-emerging diseases
(eg tuberculosis, diphtheria), old unconquered diseases (eg malaria,
dengue), diseases related to urbanisation and poorly planned development
and tourism, and inequitable allocation of resources, threaten many
people's health. The conference will review these issues as well as the
costs and benefits of present and new programmes for health and
development.

Dear Chiwoza,
this newsgrouop will be moderated soon which should guarantee that Christmas
issues and other junk mail does not affect schisto anymore.
Concerning your comment about stimulating and interesting schisto related issues
on this list, I hope that the number of important information will increase in
the future. This list can only be as good as the participants make it.
Yours sincerely,

Hello,
I write to express my surprise at the comments on the schisto list. Having just
recently subscribed, the Christmas issue and following comments came as quite a
surprise to say the least. I looked forward to stimulating and interesting
schisto related issues on this list rather than the surprising at times crude
comments made. Is this the norm or just a passing phase because the news is
rather "dry" at present?

Meanwhile I look forward to sharing with you all about the work on Schisto in
Malawi. We have embarked on an exciting new project that seeks to deal with some
of the issues surrounding behavioural change . Schisto has sadly affected our
tourism industry as several people are led to believe that there is schisto in
lake Malawi.

Best wishes to you all

A position in the field of PARASITE SYSTEMATICS is likely to become
available at the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), Paris, France
during 1997. Although no final decision has yet been taken, I am taking the
liberty of posting this announcement because a competition for a position
at the MNHN requires two steps:
a) Registration on a list (DEADLINE 17 JANUARY 1997);
b) The competition itself, which will be announced later.
The competition for the position will be open only to applicants who are
registered on the list.
As the successful applicant for this (possible) position will require at
least some knowledge of French, the remainder of this message is in French.
-------

JANVIER 97 me pousse a poster cette annonce.

salaire environ 10000 FF net/mois (+ supplement familial, allocations
familiales, etc).

Specialites scientifiques concernees: SYSTEMATIQUE DES PARASITES

scientifiques ou these).

        Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle
        Service du Personnel
        57 rue Cuvier
        75005 Paris

Bon courage a tous,
Jean-Lou Justine

I have a net friend who has been attempting to deal with a rather
large worm that has been growing in size and really constricting one
if the veins in his neck. He has been trying some homeopathic
treatments orally with limited success...it would seem that growth
has been inhibited or slowed but nothing that has shaken this sucker
loose. Logic tells me that there might be a number of substances
either allopathic or homeopathic that if injected directly into the
critter could kill the bugger without doing harm to the blood stream
or the patient. Any comments or recommendations please...

thanks claire.
