This year's conference is unique in several ways. The theme "PARASITOLOGY, ENVIRONMENT AND THE INDUSTRY" as well as the subthemes, "Parasitological indicators of Environmental degradation" and "Impact of industrial activities on human and animal parasitic diseases" succintly address current issues in the Delta area where oil exploration and its environmental and social effect has generated a lot of interests among scientists, politicians and industrialists. The conference will bring to Port harcourt eminent parasitologists, industrialists, environmentalists and other interest groups from different countries to discuss for the first time, in a non-coarsive atmosphere, parasitological issues related to environment and industry. Keynote speakers include Professors Iwuala and Professor Nwoke of Imo State University who will share their research findings on human and environmental impact monitoring and Professor R.I.S. Agbede of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria who will focus on the effect on animal diseases. The scientific session covers a wide range of topics that are related to the theme. Leading researchers on community strategies for parasite diagnosis and control have accepted to participate and make presentations. A pre-conference workshop on DIAGNOSIS AND CONTROL OF PARARSITES IN INDUSTRY-OPERATIONAL AREAS will hold on Wednesday, 20th October 1999. The indications are,this year's conference is holding a new, open, civil and democratic Nigeria and there are great opportunities for updating knowledge, exchanging skills and for developing collaboration and building patnership with the cream of African parasitologists. Portharcourt is at the heart of Nigeria's oil industry, a picturesque city fondly referred to as the garden city. It is a meeting point for environmentalists, industrialists and scientists. It is accessible from Lagos by sea land and air. I will be most pleased if you will take this opportunity to visit our country in its vibrancy, openness and share in its scientific outburst after several years of seclusion.
