Hi

My name is Ericka Saffell and I am a student at Carroll College in
Waukesha WI. I am taking Immunology right now, along with a course in
Parasitology. I am very curious to find out if anyone has any
information on the Immune responses of Schistosoma, not necissarily the
host response to the parasite, but the immunity of the parasite itself.
I would like to do my immunology research paper on this topic.

Thank you for your help.

Ericka,
I am not aware of somebody who works on the immunity of the parasite
itself, but there is a weak indication that schistosmes might possess
cytotoxic peptides which could be active against microorganisms.
K. Hancock et al. (J. Parasitol 1997, Aug; 83(4): 612-618) described an
antigen which is useful for the detection of S. mansoni and S. haematobium
antibodies.
It turns out out that this molecule has homology to the family of
saposin-like proteins, an evolutionary conserved class of cytotoxic
peptides which belong to the innate immune system (Tschopp and Hofmann
Trends Microbiol. 1996, March vol 4(3) :91-94)

Hope this helps a little bit,
Christoph

Dear all,

We are pleased to announce release 2 of the Schistosoma Genome
Network database SchistoDB at the following address :-

ftp://ftp.ebi.ac.uk/pub/databases/parasites/Schisto/latest_Schistodb_data_dump

The database uses the software AceDB which is freely available by ftp and
can be run on Unix (including Linux) and Windows95/NT machines.

The directory contains a file README.SchistoDB which contains full
details of how to download and install both the AceDB software and the
SchistoDB data.

It is recommended that users with release 1 of SchistoDB should empty
their current database of data (instructions for doing so are in the
README file above) and install the release 2 data from scratch (there is
no need to re-install the AceDB software, although it is recommended that
you should install the most recent version of AceDB for your machine).

It is anticipated that release 3 of SchistoDB will occur some time in
the early part of 2000.

Please e-mail me (aslett@ebi.ac.uk) or David Johnston (daj@nhm.ac.uk) with
any queries regarding SchistoDB.

Thanks,

Martin Aslett,
Parasite Genome Database Co-ordinator,
EBI,
Hinxton,Cambridge,
UK.
