1 week course held in Oxford 9th-13th July 2007
With the rapid growth in the quantity of biological data, there is a growing need for bioinformaticians to manage data in an efficient and reliable manner. The main focus of this course is on designing, creating and querying relational databases using the Open Source software MySQL.
Particular emphasis is placed on the challenge of modelling complex biological entities using Unified Modeling Language (UML) and writing effective queries using Structured Query Language (SQL). The course also addresses other important data-handling topics: the use of XML for data exchange and for handling poorly-structured data; techniques for handling large data sets, including data warehousing; and object-oriented database systems.
There is a substantial discount of 30% available to members of academic institutions, which reduces the cost of this course to £945 (normal price £1350). For more information, and details on how to book, go to http://bioinfomsc.stats.ox.ac.uk or email bligh from stats.ox.ac.uk
