AB Several techniques for measuring fractal 
   geometry were applied to growing colonies of 
   three nocardioform actinomycetes with different 
   colony morphologies or space filling properties 
   to assess their suitability for quantitative 
   characterization of colony morphology. Fractal 
   dimension (D) increased with size and complexity 
   of colonies of the filamentous Nocardia 
   asteroides and Nocardia otitidiscaviarum, but 
   decreased slightly with the non-filamentous 
   Rhodococcus erythropolis. Box count methods 
   were superior to calipers methods for analysing 
   colonies, but it was necessary to use software 
   which allowed multiple determinations at 
   different starting points on the colony outline to 
   increase measurement accuracy. Problems were 
   encountered in obtaining straight lines in some 
   Richardson plots with data from the calipers 
   method used for calculating D, but we were 
   unable to interpret our data according to a semi 
   fractal model suggested by others. Although the 
   fractal dimension obtained from the area-
   perimeter relation showed potential as a 
   descriptor of colony shape, data from a larger 
   number of colonies are required to confirm this. 
   In our study, the mass-radius method was only 
   useful for the largest colony of N. asteroides. 
   Possible applications of fractal analysis in 
   microbial colony characterisation are discussed.

   developed using Authorware Professional, 
   simulates the practical problems and decisions 
   that need to be addressed in planning, setting up 
   and carrying out research and development 
   experiments. It contains three lessons: The 
   Isolation of Microorganisms; Monitoring Growth 
   in Batch Culture; Growth in Continuous Culture. 
   The program has a highly structured linear 
   development style and is expected to occupy the 
   user for at least six to eight hours. Notable 
   features of the program include the use of 
   animation and many different response types. 
   Pull-down menus give access to a TlibraryUand 
   indicate the users location within each lesson.
