CC DECEMBER 1993

CC Editors: JWT Wimpenny (Cardiff, UK)
CC HR Bungay (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute New
CC York, USA)

CC Binary is an international journal which publishes
CC a broad range of articles related to all aspects of
CC computing as applied to microbiology. Each issue
CC contains specialist refereed articles, review
CC articles, general interest items, and reviews of
CC software, hardware and books. A News section
CC keeps the reader up-to-date on the latest
CC software, hardware, books, journals, electronic
CC communications, forthcoming meetings and events,
CC etc.and a Literature Update lists the latest
CC publications on offer in the field of computing in
CC microbiology. Short programs or program extracts
CC will be published; longer programs will be kept as
CC listings or on disks and will available separately.
CC Binary aims to provide a forum for information
CC exchange between microbiologists, globally, who
CC use computers, and is designed to appeal to a wide
CC range of computer expertise amongst its
CC readership, from novice to expert.

AB An integrated software system for taxonomic
studies has been devised and tested using a
database of mesophilic Aeromonas isolates. The
   software generated dichotomous keys and
provided an alternative simple matching algorithm
for the identification of unknown isolates. The
software may be updated by the addition of
analytical modules, the modification of the existing
database, or the integration of new databases from
other sources. The automated procedures are not
limited to microbial taxonomy and may be adapted
to a wide variety of other uses.

AB A compilation of the probabilistic matrices for
computer assisted identification of bacteria is
presented. The matrices that have been published
over the last ten years are listed. The matrices
cover a number of groups of bacteria, particularly
the medical important organisms including, Gram-
negative aerobic rods, aerobic Gram-positive cocci,
mycobacteria and some Streptomycetes, but there
are other groups that have not been covered,
particularly the anaerobic bacteria. The list of
matrices is accessible electronically via the
Microbial Strain Data Network and will be updated
   at regular intervals.
