CC Aims and Scope:
CC The present emphasis is on environmental and work physiology.
CC Environment in this sense not only includes the climatic but
CC conditions to be found in usual and unusual work. Recently there has
CC been an upsurge in the attention paid to exercise as a physiological
CC stimulus for adaptation and the journal has mirrored this by
CC publishing many papers in fields as diverse as muscle biochemistry
CC and dietary-induced thermogenesis or endocrine responses following
CC exercise. Within the chosen field the journal encompasses a broad
CC spectrum not eschewing reports of animal experimentation seen as
CC clearly relevant to the human condition.

TI Modification of Radiation-Induced Strand Breaks by Glutathione: Comparison of
Single- and Double-Strand Breaks in SV40 DNA.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 1.
AB We have adapted an in vitro model system to investigate the effects of GSH
on radiation-induced DNA SSBs and DSBs. The similar peak OERs for SSBs (6.5)
and DSBs (8.0) at 5 mM GSH suggest that the much lower OERs (2.5-3.0)
generally reported for radiation killing of cells cannot be accounted for by
differences in OER between lethal lesions (DSBs) and nonlethal lesions
   (SSBs).

AU Lacy-Hulbert-A. Wilkins-R-C. Hesketh-T-R. Metcalfe-J-C.
TI No Effect of 60 Hz Electromagnetic Fields on MYC or Beta-Actin Expression
   in Human Leukemic Cells.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 Octoer 144(1). P. 9.
AB Measurement of MYC and beta-actin expression in human HL60 cells using a
novel method for the quantitative Northern analysis of mRNA detected no
significant effect of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields
(ELF-EMFs) for exposure periods of up to 1 h to 60 Hz fields of 0.1 to 100
   microtesla.

AU Saffer-J-D. Thurston-S-J.
TI Short Exposures to 60 Hz Magnetic Fields Do Not Alter MYC Expression in
   HL60 or Daudi Cells.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 18.
AB An attempt has been made to validate, under rigorously controlled
conditions, key experiments on induction of gene expression by magnetic
fields. The results are clearly negative and point to a lack of controls in
   previous experiments.

AU Badie-C. Iliakis-G. Foray-N. Alsbeih-G. Cedervall-B. Chavaudra-N.

TI Induction and Rejoining of DNA Double-Strand Breaks and Interphase
Chromosome Breaks after Exposure to X Rays in One Normal and Two
   Hypersensitive Human Fibroblast Cell Lines.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 26.
AB The correlation of initial DNA damage, its repair and the residual damage,
and interphase chromosome breaks was examined in a normal human fibroblast
cell line and radiosensitive cells from patients with AT or lymphoblastic
leukemia. There was no correlation between DSBs or interphase chromosome
breaks and cell killing, but there was for residual DSBs and rate of
rejoining at 24 h as well as residual interphase chromosome breaks.

TI Radiation-Induced Cell Lethality of Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028:
Cooperative Effect of Hydroxyl Radical and Oxygen.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1) P. 36.
AB The lethality of gamma radiation for Salmonella typhimurium was found to
be linked to cooperative effects of extracellular hydroxyl radicals and
   oxygen on the cell surface.

TI The Effect of Dimethyl Sulfoxide on the Induction of DNA Double-Strand
Breaks in V79-4 Mammalian Cells by Alpha Particles.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 43.
AB From the protective effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) against induction
and rejoining of DSBs and inactivation of V79 cells by gamma and
alpha-particle radiation, it is inferred that the severity of damage is
reduced by DMSO by minimizing the formation of OH-induced sugar-base damage
in the vicinity of nonscavengeable DSBs.

High-Resolution Quantitative Autoradiography Applied to Microdosimetry in
   Neutron Capture Therapy.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 50.
AB This paper describes a novel approach to the microdosimetry of boron
neutron capture therapy using actual cell morphology and measured boron-10
distributions. The proposed model employs high-resolution autoradiography,
analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulation.

AU Ciesielski-B. Wielopolski-L.
TI The Effects of Boron on the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectra of
   Alanine Irradiated with Thermal Neutrons.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 59.
AB The effects of boric acid admixture on the intensity and line structure of
EPR spectra of free radicals produced in alanine by thermal neutrons are
presented. The EPR signal was enhanced dependent on the boron concentration,
and the shape of the spectra changed due to differences in the microwave
power saturation of the free radicals produced by the high- and low-LET
radiation from the neutron capture reaction.

TI Effect of In Vivo Heart Irradiation on the Development of Antioxidant
Defenses and Cardiac Functions in the Rat.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 64.
AB A single dose (20 Gy) of irradiation induced a marked drop in the
mechanical activity of the rat heart associated with the changes in
antioxidant defenses. The decrease in cardiac vitamin E levels and the
increase in the levels of MD-SOD and glutathione peroxidase suggest that
these effects were probably due to the production of free radical species
correlated to the development of inflammation.

SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 73.
AB A life-span study of beagles exposed to plutonium dioxide by inhalation
reveals that the liver contained 40% of the final body burden of plutonium,
second only to the skeleton. This report describes dose-effect relationships
for hepatic effects observed for the life span and discusses whether
competing risks from bone and lung cancer mask fatal liver cancer.

TI Relative Biological Effectiveness of Tritium for Induction of Myeloid
   Leukemia in CBA/H Mice.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 82.
AB The RBE of tritium compared to low-energy (150 kVp) X rays for the
induction of myeloid leukemia was estimated for male CBA/H mice. The value
obtained was less than 1.5, which supports the selection of units for the
   radiation weighting factor.

AU Langley-R-E. Quartuccio-S-G. Kennealey-P-T. Coleman-C-N. Bump-E-A.
TI Effect of Cell Cycle Stage, Dose Rate and Repair of Sublethal Damage on
Radiation-Induced Apoptosis in F9 Teratocarcinoma Cells.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 90.
AB This paper examines modes of cell death in F9 teratocarcinoma cells after
irradiation. Radiation-induced apoptosis is not influenced by the stage of
the cell cycle at the time of irradiation or dose rate, and there is no
   split-dose effect.

AU Fong-L. Chen-J-Y. Ting-L-L. Lui-L-T. Wang-P-M. Chen-W-L.
TI Chromosome Aberrations Induced in Human Lymphocytes after Partial-Body
   Irradiation.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 97.
AB Chromosomal aberrations in lymphocytes obtained from two patients before
and after partial-body irradiation were analyzed. Estimation of doses and
irradiated fractions using two methods is discussed.

AU Redpath-J-L. Antoniono-R-J.
TI Reduced Temperature (22xC) Results in Enhancement of Cell Killing and
Neoplastic Transformation in Noncycling HeLa x Skin Fibroblast Human Hybrid
Cells Irradiated with Low-Dose-Rate Gamma Radiation.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 102.
AB Reduced temperature (22xC) results in enhancement of cell killing and
neoplastic transformation of human hybrid cells irradiated with low-dose-rate
gamma radiation. This effect is not due to the fact that the cells are
non-cycling and is hypothesized to be due to misrepair of radiation damage.

AU Neriishi-K. Wong-F-L. Nakashima-E. Otake-M. Kodama-K. Choshi-K.
TI Relationship between Cataracts and Epilation in Atomic Bomb Survivors.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 107.
AB The risk of cataract formation per unit dose of radiation in 1713 atomic
bomb survivors was significantly greater for those who reported hair loss of
67% or more after exposure (the epilation group) than for those who reported
less or no hair loss (the no-epilation group). Although this might be
interpreted as indicating differential sensitivity to radiation between the
epilation group and the no-epilation group, it could also be explained by a
48% random error in DS86 dose estimates.

AU Brooks-A-L. Miick-R. Buschbom-R-L. Murphy-M-K. Khan-M-A.
TI The Role of Dose Rate in the Induction of Micronuclei in Deep-Lung
Fibroblasts In Vivo after Exposure to Cobalt-60 Gamma Rays.
SO Radiat-Res. 1995 October 144(1). P. 114.
AB This paper describes the influence of in vivo low-dose-rate exposure to
low-LET radiation on the induction of micronuclei in deep-lung fibroblasts.
High-dose-rate exposures were six times more effective in production of
   micronuclei than low-dose-rate exposures.
