CC Aims and Scope:
CC The present emphasis is on environmental and work physiology.
CC Environment in this sense not only includes the climatic but condi-
CC tions to be found in usual and unusual work. Recently there has
CC been an upsurge in the attention paid to exercise as a physiological
CC stimulus for adaptation and the journal has mirrored this by pub-
CC lishing many papers in fields as diverse as muscle biochemistry
CC and dietary-induced thermogenesis or endocrine responses following
CC exercise. Within the chosen field the journal encompasses a broad
CC spectrum not eschewing reports of animal experimentation seen as
CC clearly relevant to the human condition.
CC
CC Please refer to a printed copy of the journals for details on the
CC ethical and legal regulations to which authors submitting manuscripts
CC to this journal must adhere.
CC
CC Subscription information:

CC Aims and Scope:
CC The journal covers the dynamics and mechanisms of sexual processes
CC in all plant groups, including algae, fungi, mosses and ferns, as
CC well as flowering plants.
CC The following topics are included: differentiation of sexes,
CC including meiosis; differentiation of male and female gametophytes;
CC gene expression during male and female gametophyte development;
CC biotechnological use of pollen; pollen-stigma interaction;
CC recognition and interaction of gametes; events of fertilization;
CC mechanisms of gamete attraction and fusion; mechanisms of
CC incompatibility and incongruity; breeding technology of sexual
CC systems; overcoming breeding barriers; application and mechanisms
CC of gametocides a; mechanisms of apomixis and other sex derivatives.
CC Primary emphasis is placed on the experimental approach using
CC biochemical, molecular, biophysical and immunological methods,
CC but descriptive reports based on submicroscopical and cytochemical
CC methods are not excluded. Special attention is given to the
CC application of new insights in sexual systems for aquaculture of
CC algae, biotechnology of microorganisms, and plant breeding.

TI Genomic Instability Induced by Ionizing Radiation.
SO Radiat-Res. 1996 September 146(3). P. 247.
AB This review summarizes the current literature concerning genomic
instability induced by ionizing radiation. Special emphasis is given to
the potential events which initiate and perpetuate this phenotype, and to
the multiple delayed effects of exposure to such radiations.

SO Radiat-Res. 1996 September 146(3). P. 259.

p53 null mice were resistant to radiation, whereas the frequency of
chromosomally abnormal marrow cells was similar in p53 null and wild-type
   animals.

TI Radiation Inactivation of Human Prostate Cancer Cells: The Role of
   Apoptosis.
SO Radiat-Res. 1996 September 146(3). P. 267.
AB Radiation-induced apoptosis in cells of three human prostate cancer
cell lines was quantified by the nucleosome multimer assay. For DU-145
cells, the cell line which demonstrated the highest rate of
radiation-induced apoptosis, this mechanism of cell death occurred within
24 h after irradiation, followed single-hit inactivation kinetics and
accounted for approximately 5% of the alpha inactivation coefficient as
   measured by the clonogenic assay.

TI Apoptosis and Delayed Expression of c-jun and c-fos after Gamma
   Irradiation of Jurkat T Cells.
SO Radiat-Res. 1996 September 146(3). P. 276.
AB Radiation-induced apoptosis was accompanied by extensive increases in
c-jun and moderate increases in c-fos mRNA levels, both occurring at the
time of onset of internucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Late expression of
c-jun and c-fos was not, however, a general requirement for apoptosis in
   this cell line.

TI Heat-Induced Changes in Intracellular Sodium and Membrane Potential:

SO Radiat-Res. 1996 September 146(3). P. 283.
AB Heating at 42.0 or 45.0(deg)C induced a transient reduction in
intracellular sodium and a transient hyperpolarization of the plasma
membrane potential in CHO and HeLa cells. However, these changes were not
directly related to thermotolerance or cell killing by hyperthermia.

condensation of cationic thiols and co-ion depletion of anionic thiols
   near nuclear DNA.

TI The Effect of the Mass and Initial Chemical Form of Neptunium on Its

SO Radiat-Res. 1996 September 146(3). P. 306.
AB The distribution of neptunium in the blood and liver cells of rats was
established as a function of the mass and chemical form of the
radionuclide injected. The distribution was affected by the mass
administered but not by the initial chemical form of the radionuclide.

exposure to thermal neutrons alone or in combination with
p-boronophenylalanine or borocaptate were compared to those caused by X
rays. The changes were comparable. The results suggest that the vascular
endothelial cells are the target population.

TI Dose-Response Effects of Radiation on the Permeability of Endothelial

novel in vitro model to study the mechanisms and modifiers of
radiation-induced changes in permeability of the cells under flow
conditions using nonradioactive tracers. The results show that the
