TI HLA-H Mutations in the Ashkenazi Jewish Population
SO Blood-Cells-Mol-Dis. 1997 Mar 31. 23(6). P. 95-98.
DE hemochromatosis
DE population genetics
DE gene frequency
AB Hereditary hemochromatosis is a common disorder in people of
European origin. The HLA-H gene has been found to have two
mutations that apparently cause hemochromatosis. The
principal mutation, 845G->A (C282Y), is believed to have
arisen relatively recently in the Celtic population. To
determine the incidence of this mutation and the other
    hemochromatosis- associated mutation,187C->G (H63D), among
Ashkenazi Jews, a people who are believed to have arrived in
Europe in about the 8th Century A.D., we have examined the
DNA from 381 unrelated Jewish subjects and 206 non-Jewish
white controls. The gene frequency for the 845G->A
mutation among Jewish subjects was only 0.013 compared with a
frequency of 0.070 among controls, a difference that is
significant at the 0.00001 level. The phenotypically milder
nt187C->G mutation had a frequency of 0.155 in the non-Jewish
population and 0.097 in the Jewish population, a difference
that was also statistically significant at the <0.01 level.

CC Aims and Scope:
CC This journal is devoted to fundamental and applied issues in radia-
CC tion research and biophysics.
CC The topics include:
CC - Biophysics of ionizing radiation: radiation physics and chemistry,
CC radiation dosimetry, radiobiology, radioecology, biophysical
CC foundations of medical radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation
CC protection.
CC - Biophysics of non-ionizing radiations: ultraviolet, visible and
CC infrared light (including laser light), microwaves, radio waves,
CC low frequency electromagnetic fields, sound and ultrasound.
CC - Biological effects of physical factors, such as temperature,
CC pressure, gravitational forces, electric and magnetic fields.
CC - Biophysical aspects of the biosphere and space, of ecosystems and
CC and their mathematical models, and of transport processes of
CC energy and substance in biotic systems.
CC - Risk assessment and risk modelling for radiation and environmental
CC factors.
CC Contributions to these topics may include theoretical-mathematical
CC and experimental material. They can range from complex radiobio-
CC logical phenomena to issues of health physics and environmental
CC protection.
CC Special emphasis is given to fundamental research - directly or
CC indirectly related to radiation and environmental problems - but
CC articles on medical physics and biomedical engineering will be
CC accepted if they contribute to the understanding of fundamental
CC mechanisms.
CC Manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for
CC authors (see inside back cover) and should be sent to the Editorial
CC Office.
CC
CC Please refer to a printed copy of the journals for details on the
CC ethical and legal regulations to which authors submitting manuscripts
CC to this journal must adhere.
CC
CC Subscription information: Volumes 36 (4 issues) will appear in 1997.

CC Aims and Scope:
CC The European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology publishes original
CC papers, short communications, and letters to the editors on all
CC aspects of clinical pharmacology and drug therapy in humans. Data
CC from animal experiments are accepted only in the context of parallel
CC experiments in man reported in the same paper.
CC The Journal also accepts review articles on special problems related
CC to these areas, and encourages debate on controversial issues.
CC Manuscripts are welcomed on the following topics: therapeutic trials;
CC pharmacokinetics; drug metabolism; adverse drug reactions; drug
CC interactions; all aspects of drug development; prescribing policies;
CC pharmacoepidemiology, and matters relating to the safe use of drugs.
CC Methodological contributions relevant to these topics are also
CC welcomed.
CC
CC Please refer to a printed copy of the journals for details on the
CC ethical and legal regulations to which authors submitting manuscripts
CC to this journal must adhere.
