Web Applications Administrator
Grade: 6 or 7, depending on qualifications and experience

Job description: The EBI is currently running web applications on over
50 Linux servers using chiefly Apache and Tomcat. The External Services
group is responsible for maintaining and supporting the web
infrastructure in a dynamic environment, with new and upgraded
applications coming online every week. We are looking for a web
applications administrator to help maintaining and extending our web
application infrastructure, and to provide support to developers
throughout the EBI.
Qualifications and experience: The ideal applicant will have a
university degree in a computer science related field and at least 2 - 3
years work experience in the academic or commercial sector. Experience
in design, implementation and deployment of web-based applications, web
services (SOAP, REST), and in the maintenance and support roles is
desirable. The post holder must be fluent in Java, C/C++, C#, Python and
Perl, and have UNIX and/or Linux systems administration experience.
Further, the Administrator should be familiar with application servers
such as Apache, Tomcat, JBOSS, RESIN etc. Knowledge of bioinformatics
analytical tools and databases will be required. Excellent interpersonal
and communication skills will be necessary for the effective integration
with internal as well as external user groups and in-house developers.
The incumbent must be fluent in English as well as be able to manage
multiple tasks under pressure in a highly demanding and productive
environment.
Contract: An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the
successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at
the time of review.
