LongText recovery thru AcePerl

When I am retrieving a ?LongText item through AcePerl (using
the ->asString method) the tabs in the stored text are not
preserved (they become ~ 16 spaces).  

Also, if I have a line over 20 characters long, that 
line is wrapped to a new line when retrieved.

The text looks ok using xace (although I do see funny
characters where the tabs are).

Has anyone else seen this problem and have a solution? or
is it just me?
