There is no reason not to have larger files, you just need to be aware that
having very large files (> 1GB) can cause problems on some operating systems.
Its a little hard to say why there is such a speed up on Daves system without
doing some investigation but I would bet that because the speed up is so
appreciable its something to do with large files being less scattered across the
disk resulting in faster access times because the disk drive heads have to do
less seeking. But really that's all just hand waving. Its certainly worth a try.
I guess we don't give advice on this sort of stuff because it is usually quite
system specific.
