Announcing the Poplar Molecular Network

The Poplar Molecular Network (PMN) is an effort to encourage 
collaboration and facilitiate inclusion of the molecular approach 
in research on poplar (Populus spp.).  Poplar has long played a 
significant role in human culture as an ornamental, a shade tree, 
and windbreak, as well as a source of fuel, fiber, lumber, plywood 
and specialty products.  Poplar is also an excellent model tree for
experimental work: a diversity of species, crossability between
species, ease of sexual and asexual propagation, rapid growth and
differentiation, and a small genome, among others.  One part of the 
Poplar Molecular Network is it's Internet host, poplar1.

How to Reach Poplar1

You can send electronic mail with questions and comments about the PMN
newsletter to editor at poplar1.cfr.washington.edu.   This is an Internet 
address--different systems will want to see the address differently.  
Examples:

Information Available on Poplar1

Information on a wide variety of topics of interest to the Populus
community is becoming available via anonymous ftp from 
poplar1.cfr.washington.edu.   (The ftp program is a way of transferring 
files across the Internet.)  The main file of interest to everyone is 
00-README, which describes the directory structure of the anonymous ftp
site.  00-README is a plain ASCII text file.

Toby Bradshaw is making his laboratory protocols available on the 
anonymous ftp site.  These documents are in the directory /pub/protocols/toby 
and are plain ASCII text.

A copy of this newsletter can be found in the directory /pub/newsletter.
Future issues of this newsletter will also be placed in this directory.

Other information is welcome.  Please place submissions in /pub/tmp
and send mail to editor at poplar1.cfr.washington.edu with a description 
of the submission (including the submission's file name).  Submissions without
an accompanying letter to the editor will not be considered for inclusion in 
the anonymous ftp site.

Do the following steps to access the anonymous ftp site:
    - ftp to poplar1.cfr.washington.edu
    - use anonymous as your username
    - use your e-mail address as your password

get the file 00-README, which has important information about the use of 
the ftp site
