The blight is still present whereever it killed trees in the past.
It is some kind of microorganism. Even today the vast root systems
of trees killed decades ago are putting up shoots. Then the blight
kills them off.
These shoots and a few remaining trees are the basis of the search
for a resistant tree variety.
