Can trees really grow to 30'-35' in 3-4

I've seen a claim that _Sesbania grandiflora_ grown at a lowland site in
Hawaii reached 9 m height (i.e. 30') in 4 years.
I have grown balsa trees (_Ochroma lagopus_ according to Willis 6th ed.)
here at Mareeba (410 m alt. 17 S lat.) which got up around that height
in 4 years too.
I wouldn't want to build a house out of the timber of these species though :)
