Eric, California Oaks will thin themselves.  They compete for space for
light, water, good soil etc. Stronger ones will survive.  Weaker ones will
stay small, or die off.  Thinning is used commercially for plantation type
woods, mostly conifers in this hemisphere, including hardwoods in the
Southern Hemisphere, such as eucalyptus.. bibi  marc 566
