IChris, check the Bureau of Land Management in the relevant states and ask some local timber companies if they have historical information. I recall seeing one photograph from a Dakota company showing a panorama scene from 1860 and one of 1980 which showed a hundred times more trees growing now then when it was just occupied by Native Americans,and buffalos.
