boring insects

In response to your boring insects. I would recommend you look at the USDA
Forest Service Agriculture handbook 654 "Silvics of North America" Vol. 1.
I looked up menziesii but, no apparent borers were recorded.  Several
other damaging  insects were though mostly defoliating insects.
