In October, I will be vacationing near the Great Smokys and am currently
looking for natural history books on the area (the park itself or the
Southern Appalachians in general).
One which I've found already is:
Houk, Rose: Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A Natural
History Guide. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1993.
Can anyone suggest others?
From my Forestry School days at NC State, I have:
Stupka, Arthur: Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1964
(4th printing 1976).
My dendrology skills have suffered under the strain of 7 years of
urban living so I'm trying to refresh them a little. Is this Stupka book
still one of the definitive guides? Have there been any nomenclature
changes, species disappearances or appearances of note since 1964?
Thanks for the help.
Any additional suggestions about natural sites and features to see would
