Coulter pine-water absorbtion through needles

A colleague told me about an article published during the late 70s - 
early 80s that reported finding that Coulter pines were able to absorb 
water through needle stomata.  Aparently the technique of 
investigation involved radioactive tracers.  My friend was unable to 
provide the name of an author or journal.  Is anyone familliar with this 
work?
