Big black ants

Last weekend, I took down two dead red oaks. The first tree was hollow
from
the groung upto about 10 feet off the ground and had been dead for at
least two
years. The other was solid upto about 30 feet off the ground and had been
dead
less than a year.
Both trees had large populations of carpenter ants. Both trees had been
marked
in the past to be cleared.
How were these sick trees identified by the previous owner?
Should dead trees be removed?
These trees will be cut into lumber and not burned.
Thanks,
Mike Drew
