Red alder is a great nitrogen fixer & it grows in western Oregon where it
appears you reside. For a good reference, see "The Biology & Management
of Red Alder", edited by David Hibbs, Dean S. DeBell and Robert F.
Tarrant, published by Oregon State University Press in 1994.
Wind River Ranger District in southern Washington has a good example of
the results obtainable from mixing alder and Douglas-fir on a burned over
nitrogen deficient site. If you do indeed live in western Oregon & would
like to visit the site, let me know.
