>>I need help concerning a tree in my yard. Its a very tall Maple
divided into two main branches. Its a fairly old tree and fungus and
flying ants have really worked on it for awhile. Now squirls and other
small animals go into the 4 - 5 inch at the base. I'd like to save the
tree. I really can't top the tree and their is blacktop around it so it
would be very hard to feed it. I have heard that one could put a
fungicide in the cavity and then fill with cement
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I want to save that beautiful
tree.<<

First, beware that the tree can be dangerous in a wind or if you try to
fell it. It is not possible to tell over the net if the tree can be
saved. If it is away from where it would fall on anything of value or
anyone, it is a good wildlife tree and should be allowed to fill that
purpose. If it cannot be saved, the sooner it is removed, the less
dangerous the process will be. If you are not familiar with felling
trees, have an experienced person do the job.

It IS possible that the tree will live safely for many years. Have someone
look at it who knows.

More information on the tree species (What kind of maple?) etc would help
folks give better guidance. Red maples, for example, don't live very long
anyway and heroic measures to save them may fail. If the tree is dying
from the top down, it could be a lost cause regardless of species. Etc.
