hi, on a non scientific basis a hell of a lot depends on what you want
to crop
next, planting poplar under irrigation is presumably considered for an
arid area. As poplar is not a pioneer tree as such it is unlikely to be
as valuable for soil formation etc. as some other species, especially a
mixture. You can grow any tree hydroponically with a stabilising medium
to hold roots though and poplar is relatively shallow rooted
try taking a light meter amongst poplar and seeing how near you get
before light fades below required level then use anemometer set
continually further away to determine wind break benefit area
by all means ask if a humble layperson like me can be of any help
