Hemp - the fiber of the past

Here's something that I remember from my days in Humboldt County,
California: A major newspaper article noting that 3 times the fiber
could be grown per acre if hemp were used rather than the local conifer
mix of Douglas Fir, Redwood and W. Hemlock. The idea was seriously
proposed in the late 70's. Perhaps someone in the area will remember
this one.
