Faculty Research Assistant (Ecology/Silviculture): 2 Positions

Location:   Department of Forest Science, Oregon State University,
Corvallis, Oregon

Starting Date:   January 2, 1998

Responsibilities: The successful applicants for this position would
manage day to day activities, implement research projects, conduct data
analysis, and participate in technology transfer programs for the
Cooperative Forest Research Program (CFER), a joint research and
technology program of Oregon State University, the Bureau of Land
Management, and the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Research Center. This
program will address forest resource management questions in western
Oregon, including biodiversity on upland and riparian forests, while
producing wood and other commodities. The responsibilities of this
position fall in the arena of forest community ecology and forest
resource management. Specific responsibilities include: 1) participating
in the design and conduct of field research, 2) hiring, training, and
supervising field data collection crews, 3) data management and quality
assurance, 4) statistical analysis and report writing, 5) participate in
technology transfer programs, and 6) representing CFER in regional

Duty Station: One position is located in Corvallis. One position is
located in Medford.

Qualifications: A BS or MS degree in forestry, botany, or related field
is required. Knowledge of and experience in plant ecology required.
Familiarity with principles of natural resource management required.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn techniques of forest wildlife
research and to work on joint vegetation - wildlife projects. 
Experience in management of field crews required. Skills in statistical
analysis, data base management, and microcomputer use required.
Experience in report and proposal writing desirable. Ability to work,
organize, and communicate effectively with a broad array of scientists,
natural resource managers, and landowners desirable. Experience with
public forest management agencies desirable. Experience in field
research required.  The job will require travel and rigorous field work
in rough terrain.

Employment Conditions: Full-time, twelve-month, fixed-term faculty
position.  Reappointment at discretion of the Dean.  Full-time annual
salary is $23,004 - $30,000 depending on qualifications.
