I agree with Joe and Treefarmer, the rule of thumb is not to prune more
than 50% of the total stem any one year, until you reach that
merchantable length you want. Obviously, this gives a few years between
prunnings to allow for growth. On fast growing species you may benefit
from pruning past the first log.
