Pinus spp in Nursery - needle discolouration

Does anyone have experience with progressive reddening of needles in rooted
nursery cuttings of subtropical Pinus (hybrid in this case)? The
discolouration commences at the needle base and moves towards the tip.
There seems to be no disease organism involved. Prevalence is greatest
about twelve weeks after a summer setting, when conditions are warm and
humid. Some plants recover, others do not, depending on the severity of the
condition. I have a number of hypotheses as to what may be going on but
have not read or heard of anyone with first-hand experience. Any thoughts
please?

Cheers,

Mark
