Alley cropping is simply one form of intercropping, and also one form of
agroforestry.  Perhaps the best book on intercropping is still Andrews DJ
and Kassam AH, 'Multiple cropping' ASA Special Publication No 27, 1976,
but you'll find a lot of literature on the subject.  Don't get hung up on
semantics, and have a look at the paper by Ong and Jagtap via the
Agroforestry Modelling Project annual report, available on  in pdf format
on the website shown below.
