What part of Canada do you live in?  It makes a big difference.

For wet climates - hemlock.  I've seen hemlock logs that put on an
inch a year for 30 straight years.  That's a big log for 30 years, 
and it did it above 4000 feet in Oregon, which would convert to pretty
good sea level growth in the wetter parts of Canada.  OTOH, if you are
in Alberta, stick with local pines.

Generally, the best tree to plant is the one that is already growing there.
Use local vegetation as your guide and you won't go far wrong.
