Impact of maple sugaring

Hello,   

     Our town is considering not allowing a local sugaring 
operation to tap the sugar maple trees along the town common.  
I'm looking for information on the effects of tapping on maple 
trees.  If anyone has any information on the impacts of tapping 
or can direct me to resources I would greatly apprecitate it.
