Why does ash wood burn well 'green or dry'?

Much English folklaw, and my practical experience, says that ash is a
fuel wood that will 'burn well green or dry'.

Does anyone know why this is?

(I asked the scientists at the UK's Forestry Research place at Alice
Holt, and no one knew the answer).
