Guess I have to agree with Don that you are probably looking at either an
annual or a bi-annual.  Can or could you scrape green under the bark with your
thumb?

Might also be woody stemed but not considered a tree - like forsythia or
coccinea. Although from your description it probably is neither. Take a look at
