Susan: Are you sure the "firs" you saw on the nurse log are Douglas-fir. I'm not from Oregon, so I can't say you are wrong, but from what I've seen on visits to Western WA, and from what I've read, it would be more likely that the seedlings on the nurse log were hemlock or one of the true firs.
