Locally we don't have anything but gas and electric. I know one farmer
who burns corn in his pellet stove but only when the price is down.
One might get a mouse problem trying to stockpile much in the basement.
I think it would be hard to beat dry firewood if only one could find a
funace that is over 80% efficient. 
Since just about everyone is putting in gas fireplace logs these days
even firewood may go the way of the horse and buggy.
