Smokies mixed hardwood vs northern hardwood

I am looking for information discussing the movement of northern hardwoods
into the smoky mountains during the iceage and compairisons of current
northern hardwoods to the mixed hardwoods that can currently be found in
the Smokies.  Thank you for any information you can provide or direction
