Marvin,
The fact that the nuts are only a quarter-inch thick indicates that the
flowers were not adequately pollinated. Chestnut will produce empty seeds
if there is no successful pollination. If you cut one of them open, you
will probably see that there is no nutty flesh inside. But once the other
tree starts flowering, you should be getting some good nuts. So, don't give
up on them.
