DEVASTATING IMPACT ON CANADA SEEN FROM U.S. TIMBER DUTIES

I don't know if you would consider this part of the impact, but the
following is from Steve Nix's group over at About.com

The announcement of government service cuts came down yesterday. A drastic
shift in the way our government is providing services. Every ministry except
health and education is being cut by around 35%. This is being achieved by
staff layoffs and service cuts.

For example, over the next three years, the Forest Service will eliminate
about 1400 FTEs (Full Time Equivelant positions). This will be done by
eliminating current vacancies, early requirment, position buyouts, and
finally layoffs.

They will be closing 11 (out of 51) district offices and 3 (out of 6)
regional offices.

Legislation is being changed to more results oriented with professional
accountability and less micromangement by the Forest Service.
