deletions in MtDNA

Anyone out there working on deletions in MtDNA?
Well here I go...
I've got a question concerning the direct repeats flanking the
regions that get deleted. Are the mechanisms involved in the slip
mispairing related to the actual base sequence of the repeats? ie can it
be any old sequence as long as its repeated somewhere along the genome?
If yes what is important about the base sequence. If no then surely
the potential for deletions via this mechanism is much greater than those
reported. The amount of direct 5-16 base pair repeats must number in the
1000's?
Any ideas/comments ?
Jim
