Collagen crosslinking is known to follow normal ageing.
It has also been found to accelerate during diabetes
owing to the production of Advanced Glycation End (AGE)
       products.

Vasan et al (Nature Vol.382, p275, 18 Jul 1996) have
identified a AGE crosslink-breaker which selectively
cleaves these covalent crosslinks. The molecule is
N-phenacylthiazolium bromide (PTB). Tests have been
conducted in vivo (rats) and already established crosslinks
       were successfully cleaved.
