There are quite a few useful web resources.  A good place to start is:

which comprises links to numerous good sites of widely varying subject
matter, comprehensibility to the non-specialist, etc.

Good review articles on aspects of mtDNA are extremely numerous; it's
a very big subject.  I suggest using Medline and just picking the
journals you can most easily get.
