In response to Geoff Read's posting of news of a new journal....I hate to
be a wet blanket, but I think we need to limit the number of journals which
few libraries can afford to receive. I am on several library committees here
at Washington State, and we are looking at enormous increases in the costs of
journals, with relatively static budgets. It is anticipated that our science
library will have to cut 28% (by cost) over the next two years, as the price
of journals goes up and the budget does not. I won't be able to ask for new
journals in such a climate, although the price for the meiofauna journal is
modest. In the face of these difficulties, I think we are going to have to find
a cheaper way to distribute our publications!
This isn't a very wormy topic, but it affects a lot of us!
