Third circular
About 120 scientists have confirmed that they will attend the
conference. Each will present a speech or poster. The Conference will
include a fair balance of taxonomic, biological and ecological
contributions. Two plenary sessions have been planned, covering the
following topics:

Current Advances and Trends in Polychaete Biology and Ecology
Besides being e-mailed or faxed to all the scientists who confirmed

Conference venue
All sessions and meetings will be held in the Teatro da Reitoria
(Theatre of the Presidency) of Universidade Federal do Parana, Rua XV de
Novembro, 1299, in downtown Curitiba, a 2-15 minute walk from the hotels
selected by the Organizing Committee. The theatre, which can hold up to
500 people, will be provided with all conference facilities for oral
sessions and poster displays. Other facilities (such as e-mail and WWW
access, fax, photocopies) will be available at the reception room or in
nearby University offices.
Conference programme
Registration and all scientific activities will be held at the Teatro da
Reitoria, Universidade Federal do Parana. A detailed programme including
abstracts of the papers and posters presented at the conference will be
available at the reception room of the conference venue the afternoon of
2 August. There have been some changes in the programme as announced in
the 2nd Circular, including the cancellation of the symposium on
Internet mediated resources, which has been replaced by a poster
session. The formal conference banquet announced in the 2nd Circular has
also been changed to an informal and more relaxed dinner on Thursday
evening.

Oral contributions and poster presentation
All submitted papers and posters have been accepted for presentation;
about 50 of them have been edited by invited referees and the Organizing
Committee. Only presented and reviewed contributions will be considered
for publication in the Bulletin of Marine Science. The reading or
presenting of papers written by parties which are not at all present at
the conference will not be allowed. English is the official language to
be used in the conference, and no translation facilities will be
provided. Participants will be notified of the poster and oral
presentation time schedules prior to your arrival in Curitiba, through
private e-mails or faxes.
As there will be no parallel sessions, each participant will be allowed
20 minutes, including discussion, for oral contributions. Speakers are
advised to speak slowly and clearly. This time limit will be strictly
observed by chairpersons. Separate screens will be available for slides
(standard size) and overhead projection transparencies (please hold to
the 20 x 20 cm size limit). Please check to see that lettering and
images can be read from the back of a large theatre. Video facilities
will be available for oral presentations (the Brazilian video system is
PAL-M). Please notify the Organizing Committee before July 15 if you
intend to use these facilities.
Each poster will be allocated a space of 1.77 m (width) x 0,86 m
(height). Posters will be on display during three sessions. All posters
must be in English. Please keep text to a minimum, title posters
carefully, and include the name, address(es) and a photograph of the
author(s). The posters will be on display at the theatre entrance, which
will be open before the scheduled sessions, so that participants can
arrange their own posters. Among the posters, one will be selected for
an award as the `best poster' by a Sub-Committee chosen among the
Advisory Council members. The award will include a diploma, conference
T-shirt and waiver (cash) of the conference fee. The award will be
presented at the plenary session on Friday afternoon. The selection will
be based on the poster's scientific content and on the graphic design
and layout.
The contributed papers will be submitted for peer review and published
by the Bulletin of Marine Science. The proceedings will be co-edited by
Donald Reish and Paulo Lana. Information on manuscript preparation is
given at the end of this announcement. The papers must not exceed 8
printed pages, including figures and references (about 625 words per
printed page and about 27 references to a printed page). Every page,
including tables and references, must be double spaced. BMS will charge
US $ 70.00 for each additional page, which is payable to Dr. Reish. The
manuscript will not be sent to BMS until the editor receives outstanding
page charges. The original and two copies of the manuscript must be sent
by registered air-mail to Dr. Reish no later than 30 August, 1998. Do
not send electronic versions at this moment. Upon acceptance by BMS, the
MS should be submitted on a disk, single spaced. Detailed instructions
for electronic preparation will be sent after Donald Reish and Samuel
Snedaker (the BMS editor) accept the manuscript. It is very important to
note that all papers must be submitted on 28.0 cm-length (11 inches)
paper, and not on 29.5 cm paper, because the U.S.Postal Service fast
mail and Overnight Express services (which will be used to speed the
process) cannot accommodate the larger paper. The publication is
scheduled for November 1999, and will run as planned if reviewers and
authors adhere to the deadlines provided by Dr. Reish, who will present
additional information during the conference.
Conference `flea-market'
Conferences provide a good opportunity to supplement one's library with
relevant literature. If you have books, overstock reprints or any other
relevant material that can be distributed or sold (preferably with a
conference specific discount), please bring them. We make a special
request for people to bring any unwanted or otherwise spare duplicate
photos from previous conferences, with conference specification (PC-1,
PC-2, etc) and name of photographer on the back (so that we can arrange
a late-hour poster, and people can swap).
Letter of invitation
The Conference chairman will be pleased to send a letter of invitation
to help potential participants to raise funds, or obtain a visa. We will
not commit to the provision of financial support, unless formally
indicated. You may request an invitation letter directly from Paulo Lana
(lana at aica.cem.ufpr.br).
Registration and fees
The registration fee will entitle you to admittance to the conference,
conference materials, one copy of the proceedings and final programme,
the reception cocktail, coffee breaks, conference dinner, and
mid-conference tour (lunch not included). The registration fee will
entitle accompanying persons to attend the scheduled social programme
(the price of tickets to trips and tours will be kept to a minimum),
mid-conference tour, social receptions and scientific programme.
Please notice that due to a general strike in the Brazilian federal
universities, the Conference secretariat was unable to process any
credit card information or charge credit cards. We have decided not to
charge them. All the confidential credit card information sent by
conference attendants has been destroyed. Conference costs have been
advanced by the Organization Committee (actually by the chairman!),
including hotel deposits. In order to receive conference material, you
will have to make your payment upon your arrival at the registration
desk, either on Sunday, 2 August or Monday, 3 August, but no later. All
payments should be made in US $ dollars or R $ (reais, the Brazilian
currency). One US dollar is equivalent to 1.2 reais. If you have already
paid by money order, a balance of your payment will be presented to you
at the conference registration desk.

Two hotels, situated within easy walking distance of the conference
venue, have been selected and booked for the Sixth International
Polychaete Conference:

A cheaper alternative for students is the Albergue da Juventude de
Curitiba (International Hostelling), at Rua Padre Agostinho, 645
(Merces), phone + 55 41 233 2746, fax + 55 41 2332846. Cost: US $ 10.00
dollars, with breakfast and taxes included. Reservations must be made
before 31 July. The hostelling has collective male and female dorms,
very simple but neat and safe. It is not located at a walking distance
from the conference venue, but it is easily accessed by bus.
Accommodations have been booked for all attendants who requested it in
their registration forms. If you HAVE NOT asked for a hotel booking in
your registration form and want to stay in one of those hotels, please
contact them directly and state that you are going to attend the
conference. If you have asked for a hotel reservation, please DO NOT
contact hotels again, as your reservation will have already been made.
Attendants who have sent reservation information will receive a private
e-mail confirming their accommodation within the next few days.
A taxi from the Curitiba International airport to either hotel costs
about US $ 25.00-30.00. A good and less expensive alternative is to take
the Ligeirinho bus (line Aeroporto-Centro Civico). It costs less than US
$ 1.00 and takes about 40-60 minutes to Curitiba downtown, depending on
the traffic. If you are booked in Inter Palace Hotel, ask the driver to
be let off at the CIRCULO MILITAR stop. From there it will take you a
3-minute walk to the hotel. If you are booked in San Juan Hotel, ask to
be let off at PREFEITURA stop (in Candido de Abreu Street), just a
3-minute walk from the hotel. Bus drivers most probably will not speak
English, so write these names on a piece of paper. You can get detailed

(Portuguese). Staff from the conference secretariat will be at the
airport from Friday afternoon (31 July) to Sunday evening (2 August),
waiting for conference attendants. If you plan to travel by bus, please
contact the Organizing Committe to receive additional information. If

Lunch for Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5 (mid-conference day),
Thursday, 6 August, and Friday, 7 August, will be provided at Inter
Palace Hotel (a 2-minute walk from the conference venue) at the cost of
US $ 10.00 per meal (soft drinks and beer not included!), for those who
have so requested at the registration form. If you want to be included
in this group, please contact the Organization Committee before July 15.
Later registrations for lunch will not be accepted.
Travel to Brazil and Curitiba

Curitiba is the capital city of Parana, a state located in southern
Brazil. It has 1,300,000 inhabitants and its climate is temperate.
Please remember that in August, it will be winter time in Curitiba, with
average temperatures of 13oC (55 F). Lower temperatures, down to 2o C
during the evening, are not uncommon at this time of the year. Curitiba
has already celebrated its 300th anniversary and the city has counted on
the contribution of Italian, German, Polish, Japanese and Ukrainian
immigrants and their descendants to be a well-planned, clean and
agreeable city. Though most of the conference activities will be
concentrated in downtown Curitiba, which is not particularly attractive,
try to visit some of its 16 large urban parks, 42 art galleries, 43
museums, 9 cultural centers, and 160 libraries during your stay in the
city. Ask your hotel to explain the use of the Jardineira bus. It is a
very cheap and nice way to get to know the whole city.
Visas - It is the attendants' responsibility to make sure that their
travel documents and any necessary visas are in good order. You are
advised to contact the Brazilian embassy or consulate in your country to
check about the need to apply for a visa. Brazilian visas are necessary
for citizens of countries which require visas from Brazilian citizens.
Visas are valid for a 90-day stay in Brazil. In case of doubt,
additional information can be obtained at the nearest Brazilian Embassy
or Consulate or from travel agencies. If you are not going to fly
directly to Brazil, please check if you will need a transit visa.
Collecting permits - Conference attendants who have stated that they are
interested in collecting biological material during their stay in Brazil
will receive personal information and instructions from the conference
chairman (lana at aica.cem.ufpr.br), during the conference.
Money, Insurance, Vaccinations - One US $ dollar is currently equivalent
to about 1.2 R $ (real, the Brazilian currency). US cash dollars are
much easier to trade, but traveller's checks are an insurance against
loss. International credit cards like Visa, American Express and
MasterCard are widely accepted. A travel insurance policy to cover
medical problems, theft and loss is a wise idea. If you plan to visit
the Amazon, a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Please do not
forget to get your vaccination certificate or you will not be allowed to
travel there.
Flight connections - There are a number of daily flights from the Rio de
Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre International Airports to the
Curitiba International Airport. Please take a look at

Mid- and post-conference tours
The mid-conference tour will be carried out as described in the previous
circular announcements. It will be free for all registered participants
and registered accompanying persons but will not include lunch (about US
$ 10.00, alcoholic or soft drinks not included).
The Organizing Committee has arranged, through the Vanetour Turismo
travel agency, a special travel and accommodation package for
conference participants. Vanetour has scheduled a reasonably priced
post-conference tour to Iguazu Falls, the Amazon and Fortaleza
(northeastern Brazil) for a group of about 30 conference attendants and
accompanying persons. Vanetour (vanetour.turismo at avalon.sul.com.br, c/o
Elisabete Gavlovski) is the official travel agency for this conference.
It is responsible for providing attendants with the best possible
tourism services. However, Vanetour will not be liable for delayed
flights, lost baggage, or other similar eventualities. Nonetheless, it
will try to assist you as well as possible to solve problems of this
nature. Information about the excursion is being sent privately to each
registered participant.
Associated workshop and course
Two courses associated with the conference will be offered to students
and other interested participants.
A pre-conference Workshop on Polychaete Ecology is being organized by
Dr. Paulo Paiva, from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, in
Arraial do Cabo, Rio de Janeiro, July 27-30, 1998. Information about the
workshop can be obtained from Dr. Paiva (e-mail: pcpaiva at acd.ufrj.br,
phone/fax + 55 21 560 5993 c/o Prof. Paulo Cesar de Paiva). Dr. Paiva
has invited some keynote speakers (Drs Paul Schroeder, Pei-Yuan Qian,
Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Edmundo Nonato, Cecilia Amaral, and Arno
Blankensteyn), to present and discuss topics on polychaete ecology and
comparative biology.
A course on polychaete cladistics will be offered just after the
conference. The staff includes Greg Rouse (University of Sydney,
Organizer), Fredrik Pleijel (Swedish Museum of Natural History),
Kristian Fauchald (Smithsonian Institution), Kirk Fitzhugh (Los Angeles
County Museum), and Paulo Lana (Centro de Estudos do Mar, logistics).
The course is mainly intended for postgraduate and early postdoctoral
students. Currently we have 13 registered participants. There are still
5 vacancies. If you are interested, please register before July 15, with
Paulo Lana (lana at aica.cem.ufpr.br).
The course is scheduled to run from 9 August to 21 August. It will
include 2 lectures each morning, followed by discussion groups until
lunch/siesta. There will be lab sessions in the afternoon until dinner.
Most evenings will be free. The course emphasis will be on systematics,
with particular emphasis on cladistic methodology. Lectures will cover
areas such as Polychaete Morphology, Diversity, Reproduction and
'Ecology', Philosophy of science, Introduction to Systematics,
Cladistics methodology, Molecular and Morphological data,
Classification, Species concepts, Biogeography, and Comparative methods.
Several case studies involving polychaetes and cladistics will be
provided. Discussion groups will follow from the morning lectures; one
or two additional papers will be read at each meeting. Each participant
will be involved in a project relevant to the course, either
individually or in groups. Participants can bring their own material and
data, or rely on the local polychaete fauna for the project. Over the
first 5 days, lab sessions will involve Polychaete Morphology and
Diversity, followed by exercises in Systematics. Instruction in the use
of programs such as PAUP, Hennig86, MacClade and Clados will be
provided. The remaining lab sessions will be devoted to the projects.
The course will be held at the Centro de Estudos do Mar (Center for
Marine Studies), in Pontal do Sul, 110 km from Curitiba. It will cost US
$ 600.00 (if you have already paid the former price of US $ 700.00, you
will be reimbursed). The fee includes accomodation (simple collective
dorms up to 4 or 5 people, bed clothing included) and three meals a day
(breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during the whole course, not including
Saturdays and Sundays. Free cooking facilities will be available to
participants. There are at least two small markets, and some very simple
restaurants (average price of meals from US $ 5 to US $ 10) at a walking
distance from the Center.
BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE - INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS (ADAPTED FOR
CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS)
Contributors to the conference should adhere strictly to the following
instructions. Authors must submit an original and two copies of the
manuscript complete with title page, figures, and tables (by registered
air mail to Dr Reish, not later than 30 August 1998). Manuscripts that
are poorly written, not formatted according to the requirements of the
Bulletin, or otherwise flawed, will be returned to the author without
review. Authors are also requested to submit the names and complete
postal addresses of up to five potential reviewers. Authors are required
to retain a complete copy of their manuscript and illustrations
identical in every respect to the original submitted manuscript.
Prior to the submission of photographs, the Editor should be consulted
for guidance. Color photographs will incur a separate page charge of up
to $1200. Papers are first reviewed for suitability by the Editor.
Suitable papers are then critically reviewed by two experts. Based on
their advice, the Editor accepts the paper, rejects the paper, or
accepts the paper contingent on revision. Revised papers that are not
resubmitted within four months will be considered rejected. The final
acceptance is made when the paper has been satisfactorily revised and
the author has submitted the final manuscript in the required electronic
format. Authors will be notified immediately of the acceptance of
their manuscript for publication.
PAGE CHARGES: Papers must not exceed 8 printed pages, including figures
and references (around 625 words per printed page and about 27
references to a printed page). Pages charges will be assessed at the
rate of US$70 per printed page for additional pages.
LANGUAGE: Only papers in English will be accepted. Spelling and word
division should follow either the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current
English or The Merriam-Webster Third New International Dictionary.
CONTENT OF MANUSCRIPT: Authors are strongly advised to consult a recent
issue of the Bulletin and follow the style and general layout of
articles. The title page should contain (a) the full title of the paper
in 20 words or less and reference the geographical location of the
research if relevant; (b) a running head of not more than 52 characters
and spaces; (c) the full name and address of each author and the name of
the institution in
which the research was conducted; (d) a list of up to 10 keywords; and
(e) the name, current postal address, and E-mail address of the
corresponding author. The abstract should be a single paragraph of not
more that 200 words and written in the passive voice. It should briefly
state the reason for the research, summarize the significant findings,
and note the implication of those findings. Figures and tables, with
their legends and headings, should be self-explanatory and not require
reference to the text. Line drawings
should be scaled for 50% reduction. Oversize figures and tables will not
be accepted unless the author is willing to assume the cost of size
reduction. Figures should be clear and legible on all copies, with
1-inch margins. Figures will be reduced to fit within a 12.5 x 20.0 cm
printed page size. The dimensions and the thickness of the individual
lines, spaces, and letters will also be reduced proportionally. Authors
are urged to refer to
the Council on Biological Editors Style Manual, 6th edition, for
guidance in the preparation of their figures. Do not send original
drawings to the Editor; when needed they will be requested. Each table
should start on a separate page. Consistency in headings and format is
desirable. Vertical rules should be avoided.
Acknowledgments, if included, are placed at the end of the text.
Literature is cited in the text as: Smith and Jones (1968) or (Smith and
Jones, 1968). All papers referred to in the text must be listed
alphabetically by the senior author's surname under the heading
"Literature Cited." Only the authors' surnames and initials are required
in the Literature Cited. The accuracy of the Literature Cited is the
responsibility of the author. Abbreviations of names of periodicals
should conform to the Council of Biological Editors Style Manual, 6th
edition, or the World List of Scientific Periodicals. Common
abbreviations and symbols, such as %, mm, m, g, ml, mg, oC (for
Celsius), m, and so forth, should be used. Abbreviate units of measure
only when used with numerals. Periods are only rarely used with
abbreviations. We prefer that measurements be given in metric units;
other equivalent units may be given in parentheses. Footnotes are not
accepted. Such ancillary information should appear in the text set off
in [brackets].
FORM OF THE MANUSCRIPT: The submitted manuscript should be typed,
double-spaced, on white paper. The sequence of the material should be:
TITLE PAGE, ABSTRACT, TEXT, LITERATURE CITED, AUTHOR ADDRESSES,
APPENDIX,
TABLES (Each table should be numbered with an arabic numeral and heading
provided), LIST OF FIGURES (Entire figure legends), FIGURES (Each figure
should be numbered with an arabic numeral and subsets with a capital
letter, A,B,C.,etc. When the figures form a collage the figure numbers
should be permanently affixed to each figure or identified as upper
left, lower right, etc.).
FINAL MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: Following acceptance of the revised
manuscript, the author will be required to submit an
electronically-prepared, correctly-formatted manuscript for
publication. Computer formatting instructions will be sent to the
author when the manuscript has been accepted for publication.
Following submittal of the final manuscript, as per the submittal
instructions, the manuscript will be set up for publication and a
galley proof returned to the author for final proof reading. The author
will be responsible for any errors that appear in the final printed
version.
