THE EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON AQUATIC OLIGOCHAETA

                                          Bilbao, Spain - 18-22 July 2000

                          - FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS -

Scope of the meeting

The International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaeta provide a forum for
scientific communication among scientists and professionals involved in
various fields of fundamental and applied research concerning aquatic
Clitellata. The major topics of the meeting will focus on: morphology,
systematics and phylogeny, behaviour, biogeography, community studies and
populations dynamics, parasite interactions, toxicology and pollution
studies, ecology, and physiology of aquatic oligochaetes.

Contributions on annelid phylogeny and especially leech phylogeny and
systematics are also welcome.

Organizing Committee

The Eight International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaeta is being organized
by the Department of Animal Biology and Genetics of the University of the
Basque Country:

- Dr. Pilar Rodriguez, Lecturer of Zoology
- Dr. Maite Martinez-Madrid, Associate teacher of Animal Physiology
- Mr. Jesus Arrate, Graduate Student on Animal Biology

The University of Basque Country and the town of Bilbao

The scientific sessions of the symposium will be held at the University of
the Basque Country at the Bilbao campus.

In the coastal road to Santiago, Bilbao is full of life and offers several
points of interest for art, food, and wine. The city is located in northern
Spain, and the Sondika airport is only at 10 kilometers. At present, the
airport has daily connections with other European towns: Basel (Basilea),
Bruxelles, London, Frankfurt, Rome, Milan, and many well known Spanish
towns such as Barcelona, Madrid, Santiago, Sevilla and Valencia. Those
traveling by car can use the A-1 motorway from France or by ferry from
Portsmouth (southern England) to Bilbao.

Accommodations

Although 700 years old, Bilbao is a modern town that has many hotels over a
wide price range. However, the conference accommodations will be in the
Universitary Colegio Mayor Miguel de Unamuno, close to the campus, with
lower prices than hotels. Both single and double rooms are available. Food
and rooms are estimated to be approximately 8,000 pts per day (about
USD$55.00). More accurate prices will be provided in the Second
Announcement.

Information on the region can be obtained from:

or
> http://www.we.lc.ehu.es/BasqueCountry/PaisVasco.html

A tentative registration fee of USD$150.00 will include excursions and the
cost of the Proceedings volume.

Oral and Poster Communications

Both poster and oral communications will be accepted. Please indicate the
main topic of your contribution in the Preliminary Registration Form to
help the organizing committee to structure the program. Suggestions on
workshops for inclusion in the program will be welcome.

Please, return the enclosed Preliminary Registration Form before 1 November
1998, to ensure that you receive the second circular. The Registration form
