Dear polychaetologists,
Dr. Marian H. Pettibone has now left the Museum and Washington D.C.
permanently. As you may have heard she suffered several falls over the
last five months or so caused by a shaky balance. She (and all of us here
at the Museum) kept hoping that the problems would clear up and that she
would be able to continue with her many on-going studies. Marian made it
back a couple of times, but only for brief visits. She was able to attend
a celebratory Worm-Tea on her 90th birthday (July 8). However, she found
that she was not ready to tackle her work. She in consultation with her
family in the Tacoma-Seattle area of Washington (state) decided that it
would make sense for her to move back to Tacoma, where she was born. She
has moved into an assisted living facility, the same in which her older
sister already lives.
We will miss her here at the Museum. Marian's contributions to the study
of polychaetes are very valuable; her papers will remain part of the
ongoing enterprise of describing and organizing the polychaetes of the
world.
Best regards
Kristian Fauchald
