                    First announcement and call for papers

            THE SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL POLYCHAETE CONFERENCE, REYKJAVIK,
                                      ICELAND

                                  2-6 July 2001

THE THEME OF THE CONFERENCE

Major topics of the conference will be polychaete diversity, phylogeny,
taxonomy and systematics, genetics and molecular biology, evolutionary
ecology, population and community ecology, and applied research. Special
plenary sessions will be organized with invited speakers that will discuss
current topics in polychaete research. Ideas and suggestions for plenary
sessions and symposia are welcome.

Keeping with tradition there will be oral presentations and poster sessions.
Contributed papers will be published in the Bulletin of Marine Science. All 
papers must be in English and will be subject to peer review.

Details of the scientific program, registration and abstract forms will be 
provided in the second announcement.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Date and Venue 

The conference will be held at Háskólabíó, July 2-6, 2001
(http://www.haskolabio.is/conference/). The lecture hall is within walking
distance of the city centre.
                                                        
The lecture hall is equipped with conference facilities and all
audio-vision equipment needed for oral sessions and poster displays. Other
facilities (e.g. e-mail, WWW access, fax, and photocopies) will also be
available. 

Language 

English is the official language for the conference, both for oral
presentations and poster displays. No translation facilities will be
available.

Travel arrangements

The official travel bureau of the conference, Iceland Travel, will arrange
hotel accommodations and pre-, mid-, and post-conference tours.

Current prices of three and four stars hotels vary from US$ 70 to US$ 200
per person per day, breakfast included. Double rooms are available at lower
prices (US$ 50 to US$ 150 per day). A list of hotels, including less
expensive mid-range alternatives, will be provided in the second
announcement.

Conference tours  
                       
There will be a traditional mid-conference tour, free of charge for
participants.
Pre- and post-conference tours will be organized depending on demand.
Possible places to visit are Myvatn, Hornstrandir and Skaftafell. Further
information about these trips will be provided in the second announcement.

A pre-conference workshop will be held at the Sandgerdi Marine Centre

Post-conference course

We are planning to hold a post-conference workshop/course on polychaete
phylogeny arranged by Fredrik Pleijel and Greg Rouse.  The contact person
