Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the publication of Volume 7 of the Taxonomic
Atlas of the Benthic Fauna of the Santa Maria Basin and Western Santa
Barbara Channel. This volume is both the fourth and final annelid volume
as well as the final volume of the14-volume series.
This project was begun in the fall of 1989 with the first volume being
published in 1993. The previous annelid volumes were published in 1994
(Vol. 4), 1995 (Vol. 5), and 1996 (Vol. 6). The present volume includes 11
polychaete families: Flabelligeridae, Acrocirridae, Fauveliopsidae,
Capitellidae, Oweniidae, Opheliidae, Scalibregmatidae, Ampharetidae,
Terebellidae, Trichobranchidae, and Sternaspidae. A total of 98 species
are treated of which fifteen are new to science in the Capitellidae (1),
Oweniidae (4), Scalibregmatidae (2), Opheliidae (1), Ampharetidae (4),
and Terebellidae (3). New names are established for a scalibregmatid and
a terebellid and two new genera are proposed in the Capitellidae and
Ampharetidae. The contributing authors are Brigitte Hilbig, Mary Petersen,
and Jim Blake.
Completion of this final volume has been difficult because the authors have
been busy with other tasks, and in some cases new employment. For a
variety of reasons, we are unable to include the maldanids, sabellids, and
serpulids at this time. However, we hope that these families can be added
to a future edition or supplement.
Approximately 1500 species of benthic invertebrates are treated in the
Atlas, providing a valuable resource to benthic biologists working on the
California fauna. The series has proven useful beyond California, with
subscriptions to biologists and libraries in 31 countries and 27 of states in
the United States. Each volume has been reprinted at least once and four
volumes have been revised.
In completing this series, I want to express special thanks to our Managing
Editor, Paul Valentich Scott, Curator of Molluscs at the Santa Barbara
Museum of Natural History. Paul obtained enthusiastic support from the
administration of the Santa Barbara Museum and has personally guided
each volume to press. I also thank the 45 different authors who have
contributed to the various chapters included in this series. Brigitte Hilbig,
Les Watling, and Andrew Lissner helped with the management,
compilation, and editing of the various volumes. Finally, this series would
never have happened without financial support from the U.S. Department of
the Interior, Minerals Management Service, and two key managers: Fred
Piltz and Frank Manago.
