Another method I tried successfully was that of freeze dehydration... see:
Veltkamp, C. J., J. C. Chubb, et al. (1994). A simple freeze dehydration
method for studying epiphytic and epizoic communities using the scanning
electron microscope. Hydrobiologia 288: 33-38.
No nasty chemicals, but careful and quick washing with distilled water is
needed to avoid osmotic blowouts.
