PROJECT SUMMARY
Given the paucity and aging of talent, the primary outcome of this project
will be one new competent taxonomist, capable of working with a phylum of
benthic marine animals, the Sipuncula .This person will also be a skilled
user of modern systems for data storage and retrieval via computer
systems accessible to all. The work will contribute to a better
understanding, based partly on phylogenetic analyses, of the relationships
and evolution of this phylum and related Spiralia. Earlier hypotheses of
sipunculan evolution will be tested by the use of morphological and
molecular characters with the aim to establish an improved taxonomy of the
phylum. Any future attempts to describe and understand coral reefs,
intertidal mud/sand flats or the deep-sea ecosystems necessitates persons
skilled in this field this project will ensure the continuity of necessary
expertise.
TRAINEE QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Have earned a PhD in the Biological Sciences. Have a
commitment to continue with aspects of this work in subsequent years.
Have some direct experience with marine invertebrates. Some expertise in
databasing systems.
Preferably have: Some experience with the Sipuncula. Knowledge of the
basics of zoological nomenclature. Experience in systematics and
phylogenetics, both morphological and molecular. Publication record.
Salary according to OEB standards.
