A candidate for the most detailed account of the period from Aristotle to 
ca 1900 is the first chapter of J. H. Ashworth's 1912 "Catalogue of the 
Arenicolidae"  which is entitled "Historical account of the Chaetopoda, 
with special reference to the Polychaeta and their classification."
